How Does a Chat Room Work?
-
Forget the Nightclub
-
A chat room can be just as interesting as going to the nightclub with your girlfriends. But instead of talking with them over a glass of wine, you will be communicating over the information highway. Oh, and one other thing, your text-based messages will have to compensate for normal face-to-face interaction. A chat room is the cyber-world's idea of human communication. They work by grouping like-minded people in cyber rooms to discuss anything from politics, movies, music, dating or sex. The text-based messages stand in for the voice of users, and the messages are delivered in real time.
Cyber Old-School
-
Chat rooms have taken a backseat to instant messaging and other social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. They were very popular in the late 1990's. But the use of chat rooms had dropped to only 18 percent among teens and only 17 percent among adults by 2005, according to the statistics from the Pew Internet & American Life Project. The numbers were 55 percent usage for teens, and 28 percent for adults in the year 2000. Even though chat rooms may be "cyber old-school," there are still millions of them for almost any subject you can think of. To participate in a chat room, potential users have to create an account for the chosen website. Then the user can jump right into the dialogue, or just sit back for a while until she catches on. Most chat rooms have a menu for users to select certain rooms, (according to the subject), and the occupants will be notify that you have entered.

Safety First
-
Users should treat the members of chat rooms the same way they treat people at a nightclub, with caution. Do not reveal too much information about yourself. And if you allow children to enter chat rooms, be sure to set certain rules and guidelines. Children tend to be very trusting, but some of the people in the cyberworld are not trustworthy. MSN and AOL required members to be paying subscribers to participate, so there will be credit card information to trace if anything should go wrong. (Using chat rooms that are only accessible to paid subscribers will lessen the risk of running into a predator, so this is definitely the better option if children are involved.)
In addition, when choosing an ID to use in a chat room do not give your full name. What happens on the Internet should stay on the Internet.
