    1. Types of Cross Dressers

      • When a cross dresser chooses to cross dress depends on what type of cross dresser he is. Cross dressers are not always men or homosexuals. They can be men, women, gay, straight or bi. The popular perception is that cross dressing is a sexual fetish, but this is not always the case. The most popular types of cross dressers are drag queens. Many of those who dress in drag are performance artists, both onstage and in everyday life. Some can make a living at it. RuPaul was a famous drag queen of the 1990s who often appeared in TV shows and films. The designation of cross dresser can also differ between cultures. In Scotland, for instance, it is not uncommon to see men wearing skirts called kilts. Since this is common, acceptable behavior in that culture, these men are not considered cross dressers.

      Reasons for Cross Dressing

      • Just as there are many types of cross dressers, so are there many reasons for cross dressing. Many cross dressers are trans-gender, born of one gender but wishing to be identified with the other. These cross dressers might even be in the process of, or desiring to have, sexual reassignment surgery. For these people, their identity is what makes them cross dress, while for others it is a fetish. Still, for others, it is simply the desire to shake up social norms and for shock value.

      Times for Cross Dressing

      • The most common and popular times for someone to cross dress would be for a party, parade or stage performance. For trans-gender persons, or those seeking or undergoing reassignment surgery, they might be cross dressing full time as part of their new identity. Straight people and entertainers often cross dress for laughs, such as when then-mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani dressed as a woman for the sketch comedy TV show "Saturday Night Live."

After having visited and participated on a number of cross-dresser (CD) and trans-gender (TG) internet forums, and being a CD / TG myself, I would mostly disagree with all three of the descriptions above. Many cross dressers are CDs simply to explore the gender role opposite they were born with. For males, they wish to explore their feminine side. These people are usually referred to as MTF or Male to Female. For genetic females, they may wish to explore their masculinity and dress and try to adapt their voice and mannerisms accordingly. These people are usually referred to as FTM or Female to Male. Though many do enjoy going out in public, they are not drag queens wanting to show off. Many simply want to blend in and “pass” as the gender they wish to present. In fact, most are likely closet crossdresser that never venture out of the privacy of their home.
