    Hiring and Training Employees

  1. A tanning salon owner must know how many employees he needs. He then spends time hiring employees he feels are suitable for the tanning business. Even if the employees that are hired are familiar with tanning, the owner will still need to take time to train them in his ways. If the employees are not trained in the ways of the owner, the salon will not run properly and conflict can arise.
  2. Adjust the Budget

  3. It is important that the tanning salon owner always keeps an eye on the budget. If necessary, the budget should be adjusted weekly or monthly to reflect any increases or decreases in expenses. Tanning salon businesses tend to be busier in the summer months. An owner may want to have a budget for the summer and another one for the winter. He must spend some time each day compiling the sales information from the day for the accountant or bookkeeper. If the salon owner handles this himself, then he will need to devote some time at the end of each day to keep the records up to date.
  4. Ordering Products

  5. Tanning salon owners don't just offer the use of a tanning bed. They also sell lotions, oils and other products for the body. The owner must take inventory and order replacements for the items that were sold during the week. Sometimes a customer may ask for a special order to be placed. It is the owner's job to go out of the way to help the customers, so he will take the time to order the extra products.
  6. Creating Prices and Promotions

  7. A tanning salon owner must spend some time deciding how much to charge for each tanning session. He may also offer promotions to ensure customers keep coming back. This could include deals such as a free session for every 10 purchased. Even if the tanning salon owner has the prices and promotions set in place, he will need to spend some time re-evaluating them. If he is selling a lot of sessions or the business's expenses have increased, then he will want to increase the prices. If the salon is doing poorly, he may want to decrease the prices to try to attract new customers.
  8. Assisting Customers

  9. It is important for the tanning salon owner to spend time with the customers. The owner will show the customers around the salon, show them how to work the tanning booths, and offer to be of any service. The owner may spend some time recommending lotions or just chatting. Getting to know the customers personally will help ensure that the customer comes back month after month. The more repeat customers the salon has, the less it will have to spend on advertising to find new clients.
  10. Cleaning

  11. The tanning beds must be cleaned in between each use. The tanning salon owner can ask the employees to do this, but he may still have to take some time each day to clean the tanning beds and the salon. The employees may be busy with customers, or they may be working on something else. It is a good idea for the owner to work on every part of the business, including the cleaning. This keeps him informed of how well the employees are doing. If the owner goes to clean a tanning bed, and it is filthy, he will know that it wasn't cleaned properly in between uses.
