What Causes Eye Wrinkles?

  1. A Wrinkle In Time

    • Wrinkles are viewed as a sign of aging. There are many people in society who do not like to show or have wrinkles, even though everyone gets older. This is especially true of eye wrinkles, because they are the hardest to hide. Knowing how eye wrinkles form, however, may clue you in on how to make them less visible.

    Ironing Out Your Skin

    • The formation of wrinkles has a lot to do with how well skin retains and uses moisture. The dermis--the middle layer of skin--holds the collagen that keeps skin looking wrinkle-free. It sends collagen to elastin fibers that are responsible for stretching the epidermis, the visible skin layer. As the years go by, the dermis loses the ability to hold collagen. Skin becomes thin, starts to sag and wrinkles form. Gravity also takes its toll on skin and starts to pull it downward as people age and have less ability to fight it. Eyes are no exception. In fact, eyes are one of the first places where wrinkles can be seen, even in people who take good care of their skin. That's because the eye area is full of muscles that are constantly moving. People communicate many emotions through the eyes and they move every time you laugh, cry, smile, frown or yell.

    Causes of Eye Wrinkles

    • Facial expressions aren't the only reason for eye wrinkles. For people who spend a lot of time in the sun, small wrinkles can form just from squinting all the time. Spending a lot of time in the sun can also cause general damage to your skin by wearing out the layers and drying it up, causing the skin around you eyes to sag faster. Smoking doesn't help eye wrinkles, either. Smoking can cause premature wrinkles from not only draining the moisture from your face but by constantly squinting from the smoke near your eyes. It seems that the only surefire way to get rid of eye wrinkles is to start taking care of yourself long before they start to form. If you spend a lot of time in the sun, wear sun block on your face and invest in a good pair of shades as those UV rays can cause premature eye wrinkles. If you smoke, quit. Be sure to take care of your skin in general by keeping it moist and staying hydrated.
