How Does an Aluminum Baseball Bat Differ From a Wooden Baseball Bat?

One of the biggest differences between an aluminum baseball bat and a wooden bat is the weight distribution--aluminum bats are hollow, and wooden bats are solid. Being that the aluminum bat is hollow, the center of gravity is down towards the hands, which makes for a faster swing; the wooden bat's center of gravity is further down the barrel, causing slower swing speed. This is called the swing weight.

Another big difference between aluminum and wood is that aluminum bats are allowed at all levels up to and including college, but not in the major leagues. A big reason why the major leagues won't allow them is because they can be swung faster and can cause too many potential injuries. This is due to the fact that the ball will have a lot more velocity when hit.

A huge difference between aluminum and wooden bats is the price. Aluminum bats can be up to two to three times more expensive than wood. But in the long run, this tends to balance out as they also last a lot longer (they don't shatter).
Wood bats start at about $10 and can go up to around $100. Aluminum bats range from $30 for a basic variety all the way up to $350 for a top-of-the-line model.

Wooden bats, unlike their aluminum counterparts, have a tendency to break when hitting the ball. This is often seen at the major league level when the ball is struck at the trademark area of the bat. This area tends to be a weak spot on the bat. It is not uncommon to see shards and splinters of wood go flying out onto the playing field after a bat has been broken.

Aluminum bats have a tendency to flex when the ball is struck, and act a bit like a trampoline. The ball strikes the bat and the bat has a little spring to it. This causes the ball to be shot out at a great velocity. This is not the case with wooden bats, being that they are solid.
