From Quick Guide: Day Trading

    Preparing To Trade

  1. A day trader spends most of his day trading stocks or other securities and aims to make a profit each day. However, to be a successful trader you must prepare well before trading. The day trader researches the market thoroughly before actually trading with real money, Day traders follow a trading system they have developed or adopted. This trading system is the basis of their day trading, but it is always adapted and improved in response to market conditions. The market moves fast during trading hours so the trader analyzes the system and its results when he is not trading.
  2. Day Trading Hours

  3. A day trader must be focused and disciplined in his strategy during trading hours. He often watches a monitor or several monitors at once to keep track of the many securities and the market. He will use special software to alert him of trends, but day trading is fast-paced and he must be prepared to act. A small delay may mean the difference between a profit and a loss. Much of the trading time is spent observing the markets, but certain prices or market events will trigger a call to make a move and the trader must be ready. The trader may have many trades in play at the same time that he must track. The trader must limit losses on each trade and take profits when he can. If successful, the flurry of activity will result in a profit for the day.
  4. Administrative Duties

  5. After trading has closed for the day, the day trader has a variety of administrative duties to which he must tend. Occasionally, he will have an assistant help him with duties such as accounting for all of the trades, reviewing trades and insuring that all trades have settled. A day trader may make hundreds of trades each day. Properly accounting for them is an important task.
  6. After Hours

  7. The day trader always reviews the market and any new information or research that would give him an advantage in trading. Often, the life of a trader is a lonely one, so the trader may spend his after hours trading ideas with other traders, either by speaking with them directly or through online forums and message boards. The day of a day trader is an ongoing one. With modern communications and advanced trading tools, a day trader can always trade in any market 24 hours a day. It is a pressure-filled job and not for everyone. However, if a trader is consistently profitable and handles the pressure, day trading offers a lucrative and flexible lifestyle.
