How Does a Part-Time Job Differ From a Full-Time Job?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines a full-time job as one in which a person works 35 or more hours per week and a part-time job as any job with fewer than 35 hours of work per week. On a company-by-company basis, the definition of a full-time job can vary from as few as 30 hours per week to (most commonly) 40 hours per week. Regardless of the exact definition, there are a few important differences between full- and part-time jobs.

One common difference between full- and part-time jobs is that full-time employees are more likely to be offered benefits. Compensation packages for full-time jobs often include health, dental, and life insurance as well as opportunities for flex time. Not all full-time jobs include benefits, but the majority do--and the cut-off points for benefits often depends on how the company defines full-time work. Some companies may offer benefits only to employees who work 40+ hours per week, whereas others may draw the line at 30 or 32. Still others may extend benefits to all employees, including part-time workers, although this is less common.

Pay Structure and Job Security

Full-time workers can be paid either an hourly wage or a flat monthly salary. Hourly workers usually receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week, whereas salaried workers usually do not. Part-time workers are most commonly paid by the hour and do not receive overtime pay, although some may receive a flat salary.
There are benefits to either working arrangement. In some cases, part-time workers may have greater job security because their salaries constitute smaller percentage of the employer's budget and because they usually do not receive benefits (which cost companies additional money). In other cases, full-time employees may have better job security because their work may be more essential or they may be more difficult to replace.
