How Does Shoe Size Convert From U.S. Sizes to Other Countries?
  1. U.S. and U.K. Shoe Sizes and Their Basis

    • Shoe sizes in the U.S. are based on the United Kingdom system. Feet are measured in inches, and the sizes increase in increments of one-third of 1 inch. The difference in sizes is that sizes in the U.S. start at size 1, whereas sizes in the U.K. start at 0. Therefore U.S. sizes are always one number higher than their U.K. counterpart.

    U.S. and European Shoe Sizes

    • Mainland Europe uses a different method of sizing shoes than the U.K. or U.S. European sizes are based on the Paris Point, which is equivalent of 2/3 of 1 centimeter. There is no easy way to convert the measurement. An increase of one full size in the U.S. equals a size increase of 1 to 1 1/2 sizes on the European scale. However, while the U.S. and U.K. have men's and women's sizes, the European scale does not adjust for gender. A European size 40 is equivalent to a U.S. men's 9 or a U.S. women's 7 1/2.

    U.S. and Asian sizes

    • Chinese sizes are based on the European sizes. Australian shoe sizes are based on the U.K. system but start at one-half instead of 0. Therefore, to convert from U.S. to Australian, subtract 1/2 of the number for the men's and 1 1/2 for the women.

Japanese sizes are based on the length of the shoe, in centimeters. An easy method of converting sizes is to take the U.S. size an add 18 to it. Korean sizes are based on the millimeter length of the shoe and has no easy method of conversion.

"Japanese sizes are based on the length of the shoe, in centimeters. An easy method of converting sizes is to take the U.S. size an add 18 to it." This doesn't always work. For example,I am a US size 6,though I would be a 5 1/2 if I didn't have high arches and an awkward foot shape. However,my foot measures 22.5 cm,and in Japanese shoes,I wear a 22.5 or 23,depending on the shoe, whereas if I had added 18 to my shoe size,a 6,I would have gotten the number 24,a shoe size that is way too big for me,even with thick socks. Perhaps it works for some of the other sizes, but it doesn't work for me. Thank you.
