How Does a Furniture Store Owner Spend a Workday?
-
A furniture store owner's workday is different from the average office worker's workday. While he must still go into the office and check messages and complete the administrative tasks necessary for a business owner, if he is an independent store owner, he will spend most of his day out on the sales floor with his employees.
-
Daily administrative tasks include employee care, such as payroll, keeping track of employee benefits such as insurance and time off, inventory and customer service. He will check any messages and return calls. He may also take calls during the day from customers who need more information on a certain product or from customers who have a warranty issue with a certain product.
-
The furniture store owner will check inventory--while not on a daily basis, it is checked at least on a weekly basis. If she is low in stock on a particular item, she will order more of that item if her reports show it as a good seller. If a product is at its reorder level but it was in inventory for too long prior to selling, the furniture store owner will have to decide whether to order that piece again.
-
The furniture store owner will also help his sales force. If someone needs help closing a deal, he is there to help. Some furniture stores offer in-store financing. The furniture store owner is there to run the credit checks and make an approval. He will go over all of the financing documents with the customer, then close the deal. Once the deal is closed, he will contact his drivers to schedule a delivery of the furniture.
-
At the end of the day, the furniture store owner will run daily reports (sales reports), make deposits, run tax reports and, if it is payday, run the employee payroll reports. While a furniture store owner does not have many diverse duties, his daily duties are enough to keep him quite busy throughout the day, particularly if his store offers in-store financing and delivery services.
