Heat transfer paper is a special type of ink jet or laser paper used to make custom-made shirts and other original specialty items through the use of biological heat transfer. Specialized heat transfer printing onto heat transfer paper is an easy means of printing custom images onto T-shirts, jigsaw puzzles and many other items. Many colors are used when using the heat transfer process.

In the heat transfer paper process, a picture must first be chosen. After the picture is selected, the picture is uploaded into a computer and the image is cleaned up. Once the picture is touched up, the image is printed on a high-quality printer using commercial heat transfer paper. Although very similar; commercial, heat transfer paper is not quite like iron-on paper. Heat transfer paper does not peel, bleed or fade; and it lasts considerably longer than iron-on paper pictures. Once the picture is printed, the picture is hand cut. Some people choose to attach edging around the picture image to increase durability. The picture image is then placed precisely onto the T-shirt or some other product or clothing using lasers. This is to make sure that the image is straight. If the process is being conducted at a business, generally, the product is then entered into the heat press which is much like a very large iron. Heat presses are capable of evenly distributing hundreds of pounds of pressure and simultaneously manage temperature control. However, the image can be transferred by using a domestic iron. The heat transfer paper which the picture image is being printed on melts into the fibers of the T-shirt or clothing product and actually becomes an element of the item, itself, without unsettling the image. By using the heat transfer paper technique, many colors are able to be printed according to a customer's personal needs and desires, and the colors are bold and vibrant.

Laser heat transfer paper is a top quality paper for heat transfer. It is especially used with laser copiers and laser printers. It is also especially designed for use on dark fabrics. However, it can be successfully used on light-colored fabrics as well. As with ink jet heat transfer paper; once the image is put in place via the heat transfer process, the image is there for good. It will not fade or wash off even in a hot water wash, and it can be used on all types of fabrics. Laser and ink jet heat transfer paper can be used on various fabrics to create customized T-shirts, aprons, mouse pads, and so many more fun projects. Amazingly, heat transfer paper has also been used to make personalized jigsaw puzzles.
