How Does a Welding Inspector Spend a Workday?
-
Inspecting Welding Jobs
-
As indicated by the job title, a welding inspector spends the majority of his work day inspecting various welding jobs, which includes checking for quality work, noticing and documenting errors or faulty work, and recommending corrective measures. A welding inspector is a person with extensive knowledge and know-how concerning the skill of welding, particularly in an industrial or large-scale capacity. Usually a welding inspector will attain his rank as inspector after working for years as a welder from the journeyman level all the way up to the highly-skilled and experienced level.
Delegating Tasks
-
In addition to inspecting particular welding jobs, a welding inspector may delegate certain welding job assignments to various employees. More often than not, a welding inspector will be completely familiar with a part of a particular welding job site, both in terms of jobs to be completed and the best people to perform certain job functions. The delegation of job assignments is normally a part of a welding inspector's daily job functions.
-
Preparing Reports
-
A welding inspector has the final word as to whether or not a particular welding job has been performed correctly and whether or not a part or piece of equipment is structurally sound following a welding job. A large part of a welding inspector's daily work involves preparing reports that document the work that has been done, the quality of that work and whether or not a welding job has been satisfactorily completed as per certain industrial guidelines that differ from job site to job site.

Actually, on a gas pipeline the welding inspector DOES have the final say as to whether or not a weld has to be repaired. -

"A welding inspector has the final word as to whether or not a particular welding job has been performed correctly and whether or not a part or piece of equipment is structurally sound following a welding job." that is not true, A welding Inspector does not have the final Say whether a job is Structurally sound, He only reports whether the job was done to the specifications. It is the Structural Engineer that has the final say whether something is structurally sound or not!
