- One of the first decisions in planning your wedding is to choose your maid of honor--the woman who will be your right-hand person throughout the wedding process. You immediately remember a conversation you had with your best friend in school. You each promised to be one another's maid of honor when you got married someday. However, you've lost contact with that friend and haven't spoken to her for months or even years. Should you try to find her and keep the promise you made years ago? If not, how do you go about choosing your maid of honor?
- Selecting a person to be your maid of honor is not a decision to be taken lightly. Your maid of honor will be there to help you through the wedding planning process and will help you on and after the actual event. Don't feel guilty about choosing someone other than your friend from school to be your maid of honor. You have an important decision, and you need to make sure you take things into consideration when selecting your maid of honor.
- First, is she local? It will be beneficial to have your maid of honor live near you, if not in the same town. If she lives locally, she will be more available to help you in the wedding planning process and will be easier for you to reach and talk to if you need her.
- Second, can she handle the duties of the maid of honor? The maid of honor has a big job and a lot of responsibility in the wedding planning process. The maid of honor will help you to find a location for the wedding and reception and choose and address wedding invitations. She will help you to shop for a wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses. She will help keep the bridesmaids organized and inform members of the wedding party and family of any updates or changes to scheduled events. She will be available if you need an opinion or somebody to talk to. She will be the one to plan your bridal shower or bachelorette party. On your wedding day, she will help you with your hair and makeup and putting on your wedding attire. She will hold onto your bouquet and groom's ring during the ceremony. Your maid of honor has a lot of responsibilities in the wedding process.
- Third, look at her past performance or future events she'll be dealing with during the wedding planning process. You don't want to select a woman to be your maid of honor if she is bad at keeping appointments or keeping schedules and getting things done. You may need to consider choosing a different person to be your maid of honor if she is getting ready to have a baby or going through a divorce.
- Don't skimp when it comes to choosing your maid of honor. The wedding process will be less stressful and more successful if you choose a woman to be your maid of honor who can handle the responsibilities of her position and maintain a cheery disposition during the process. Remember, choosing the maid of honor belongs to you and nobody else. Choose the best for yourself.
