How Does a Freelance Courier Spend a Workday?

  1. Freelance Courier Basics

    • A freelance courier is hired by companies to deliver and escort mail. There are various benefits to being a freelance courier, which can include free flights to places where you are delivering packages to. Contact the courier company managers and let them know of your availability. This is done a couple of months or weeks in advance, so that the company can schedule you for the trips that are needed. You then contact a booking agency to purchase a ticket, if the company does not do this for you. Confirm with the company contacts that you have the plane ticket and you are set to deliver what it is they require. Collect the necessary materials from the company office or from a representative who will meet you in a certain location before your flight. This includes the material to be delivered, and any form that is required to be attached or delivered with the material.

    Delivering Mail

    • Upon arriving to a destination, a freelance courier meets the company representative who will receive the materials either at the office or at the company office in that country. The representative will sign the necessary forms and verify that the material was delivered on time. Afterward, the courier calls the company back home to confirm that the material is now in the hands of the recipient. A freelance courier usually uses time management effectively and is good at multitasking, because of the demands of the job. It is important to be efficient and to gain the trust of the company managers.

    Return Trip and Considerations

    • The return trip may require a freelance courier to send back a portion of the forms or additional material that is needed to be sent to the home office. A courier makes sure to keep in close contact with the company representatives to avoid miscommunication and for the process to go smoothly. A courier is very flexible and usually is up to the task of delivering multiple mails at a given time. When arriving at the original place, a freelance courier meets with the company representative and arranges another time to fly and deliver mail again.
