How Does a Forensic Photographer Spend a Workday?

The Job

A forensic photographer usually works for the police department or an agency such as the FBI or a forensics specialists business. Their workday can include many tasks and they tend to work overtime quite often. A forensic photographer must have basic knowledge of crime scenes and photography. These skills can be acquired by getting a college degree in criminology and criminal justice.

Gathering Evidence

A forensic photographer starts the workday catching up on paperwork, then usually goes to one of many sites that need their help, whether a car accident or a murder scene.Once called to a crime scene forensic photographers will take pictures of every aspect of the crime. They will need to have enough to photograph everything that is of value to the investigators. This involves tire treads, footprints, blood spatter, bullet holes and anything relevant to the crime, such as pictures of victims that have been assaulted or even murdered. Their evidence needs to be able to stand up in court, so it must be clear and concise with supporting data. At the site the forensic photographer must have clear lighting and be able to take photos in all types of conditions and lighting.

Work Hours

A forensic photographer will work a regular shift but can be called in at all hours since crimes happen at all times of the day. This usually involves overtime and working over the weekend, holidays and nights.
