How Does AARP Dental Insurance Work?

  1. Who is Eligible for AARP Dental Insurance?

    • It's easy to qualify for AARP dental insurance. Applicants need only be active members of AARP to be eligible for coverage. AARP membership is open to adults 50 and older. Membership is available for 1- through 5-year periods, with the annual price of membership decreasing for longer terms. Visit the AARP website for access to an online application.
As with other dental plans, the AARP member and applicant can include family members in the dental coverage plan. Eligible family members include a spouse or domestic partner, and unmarried dependent children up to the last day in the month of the child's 26th birthday. Children with disabilities can maintain coverage beyond their 26th birthday. The AARP dental plan also offers coverage for dependent grandchildren and foster children from the date of placement in the home.
Sign-up is easy, too. Just download, complete and mail the form with your check, money order or credit card information. Several payment options are available, including automatic monthly drafts and quarterly or annual remittance plans. You may also enroll by telephone.
The plan is worth considering because it offers premiums that remain the same for 2 years, as well as immediate coverage for many routine dental procedures.

What Kind of Coverage does AARP Dental Insurance Provide?

    • Applicants may choose from two plans. If you choose Plan A, you will have 100 percent coverage on regular preventive care. Coverage for more extensive treatment, such as root canals, caps at 50 percent. This plan also offers 100 percent coverage for dental accidents and a lower deductible than Plan B.
Regular, preventive care is covered at 80 percent on Plan B. Other services are reimbursed at 50 percent. Additional coverage is provided on both plans after a 12-month waiting period.

How to File a Claim with AARP Dental Insurance

    • AARP dental insurance makes it easy. When you visit a participating dentist, your provider will complete and submit the forms on your behalf. You don't need to do anything. If you choose dental care from a non-participating dentist, complete and submit your own claim form. The simple, 1-page form (available at http://www3.deltadentalins.com/aarp/plan_info/claim.html) should be completed carefully to avoid processing delays. If in doubt about how to complete the form, call the available toll-free number for customer support.
Be sure to include a statement from your dentist outlining each service provided, along with the identification number for the AARP member. Claims are generally processed in about 14 days.
