  1. Lockjaw Symptoms

    • Lockjaw, known to doctors as Trismus, is caused by tissue inflammation around the molars or around the mastication muscles, tonsillitis, or TMD--Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. Symptoms of Trismus include the inability to open or close the mouth, the inability to chew foods, or instances of the jaw sticking in an open or closed position.

    Lockjaw Treatment

    • There is usually a dental treatment associated with lockjaw treatment, to allow the jaw to realign in the proper position. Other treatments include physical therapy, mouth equipment like the Facial Flex, and devices that limit the jaw's range of motion. If pain is a symptom, treat with acetaminophen or muscle relaxers prescribed by a doctor.

    Lockjaw Prevention

    • In order to prevent lockjaw, see a dentist and ensure that your bite aligns properly and there are no inflamed tissues around the teeth. If you are experiencing frequent and persistent sore throats, see a doctor to make sure tonsillitis is ruled out.
