How Does an Emo Teen Dress?

What is Emo?

The term "emo" originally stemmed from a genre of punk music in Washington, D.C. These days, emo refers to a fashion trend rather than music. Emo fashion styles today do not seem all that distant from Goth styles.

Shirts

Both boys and girls wear tight T-shirts, typically T-shirts depicting skulls, cute drawings or band names. These band names should be emo or indie bands. If it's cold out, some emo teens wear tight long-sleeved T-shirts under their other short-sleeved shirts.

Jeans and Skirts

When it comes to jeans, once again boys and girls prefer them tight. The jeans are also low-rise and long enough to cover the tops of shoes. Some girls will wear skirts, as well, and these are usually flutter skirts or skirts with a scarf-style appearance.

Hoodies

Emo teens prefer to layer their clothes rather than wear jackets. So if the weather doesn't permit just a T-shirt, emo teens will wear hoodies over their layers of T-shirts. Some will even layer hoodies over lighter hoodies.

Shoes

Shoes are simple looking and fairly practical. Most will wear Converse, Vans or Converse-style shoes and boots. All shoes are canvas, perfect for drawing on.

Accessories

Accessories are a must. Some typical accessories are belts, wide bracelets or arm bands, and large sunglasses. In cold weather, some emo teenagers will wear layers of scarves and fingerless gloves. Most girls do not carry a purse but use messenger bags instead. Of course, messenger bags with indie-band logos on them are preferred over plain. If a girl is wearing a skirt, she may wear decorated knee socks or fishnet pantyhose.
