How Does Nail Fungus Develop?

In order for nail fungus to develop, certain conditions must exist to support growth of the organisms responsible for nail fungus. There must be a warm and moist place for the fungus to proliferate--ideally without a lot of disturbance to the environment. People who do not change their socks frequently or who engage in activities that get the feet wet are the most likely candidates to develop nail fungus, especially if their toenails are not adequately trimmed.

Developing Nail Fungus

Different types of microorganisms are prevalent in all parts of the environment. Nearly everyone comes into contact with the fungal spores that cause nail fungus. But in people who have the right conditions present in their feet, the fungus spores are able to take hold in the space between the skin and the toenail and begin to reproduce and multiply. This leads to the characteristic appearance of nail fungus. In people who do not have the right conditions on their feet, the fungal spores encountered in daily life are not able to proliferate and reproduce.

Prevention

If you do not want nail fungus to develop, the easiest way to prevent it is to keep your toenails neatly trimmed, change your socks frequently--especially if your feet become wet. Wash your feet regularly with soap and water, and let them dry completely before you put your socks on. This should make it difficult for fungal spores to multiply in your toenails and cause a nail fungus. If you already have a nail fungus, however, see your doctor for information on how to treat it.
