    Don't Book in Advance

  1. It is common for people to plan a vacation several months ahead of time. Cruises are often planned for more than a year. The date is selected, the destination is picked and the travel plans are made. Transportation and car rentals are arranged. The rooms are booked, and deposits or full payments are sent.

This will give you the peace of mind that your vacation will take place, but at what cost? You can save money if you book your transportation, rental vehicle and room at the last possible moment. You may have to change your dates or destination, but it will be well worth it.
  2. Why Waiting Saves You Money

  3. The companies associated with travel arrangements are very competitive. Each one is fighting to get your business, and so are the airlines, hotels, rental agencies and cruise lines they deal with. These businesses want to get the most money they can for their product or service, but this is not always possible. They know it is better to make the sale at a lower price then to not make it at all. You can save 60 to 80 percent of the normal charges by waiting to make reservations.
  4. What Is Considered Last Minute

  5. The closer it gets to the day in question, the lower the rates can be. The time varies for what is considered last minute. For cruise lines this could be one to two months in advance. When you are buying transportation tickets or booking accommodations, this could range from three hours to two weeks. The objective is to be flexible with your travel dates. You may have to leave sooner or stay longer, but you can save a lot of money in doing so.
  6. Finding Last Minute Travel Deals

  7. Numerous web sites specialize in last minute travel. Some are listed in the Resources sections. These companies have close relationships within the travel industry, usually buy in bulk and receive discounts. The sites have last minute deals available now, or you can check other possibilities using their search options. You can also sign up for newsletters or get alerts from these sites to learn about specific destinations. Often, you can go directly to the hotel, cruise line or airline's web site and find last minute specials. Calling the companies directly is another approach to saving money on your trip.
