Having a pond skimmer is a very useful tool if you have a pond in your yard or at your place of business. Floating debris is filtered out before it reaches the pond pump and this keeps maintenance of the pump and filter to a minimum.

Pond skimmers are similar to pool skimmers in how they work. A pond skimmer is placed in the ground right at the edge of your pond, above the line of water. The rubber pond liner is sealed to the front of the box with a clamp. Once water flows from the pond, it goes to the opening of the skimmer through a door that tilts. This keeps out any larger debris, while filtering out smaller debris and trash. The debris gets pushed through a leaf net and through a filter into a submersible pump, which is at the back of the box.
Water then flows out of the pump through a discharge assembly into a piece of pipe that is flexible and into the ground to another filter or even a waterfall mechanism. The door that tilts is called a weir and is specially created to make all of the water flow to the top of the door. This creates the most advantageous skimming action possible. The door can be closed so that it can be cleaned, and the filters are removable for rinsing and replacing. - Pond skimmers come in various sizes and water flow, ranging from 1,200 gallons per hour up to 3,000 gallons per hour for standard sized ponds.
