How Does a Fishing Rod Bend Without Breaking?

Types

Fishing rods come in many different types. There are carbon fiber poles, fly rods, spin casting rods, sea rods, spinning rods, ice fishing rods, ultra-light rods, trolling rods, surf rods and telescopic rods.

Fishing rods split into two parts: the rod and the handle. The rod is the part that bends and extends outward towards the water. The handle is the portion that is gripped by the fisherman. The handle splits at the bottom, the lower handle, which holds the rod, and the upper handle which begins the rod.

In addition, there are line guides which run from the top of the rod to the bottom. These guides can be hoops made from steel wire, plastic or ceramic. Ceramic guides aid in protecting the actual line as it moves with the fish.

Materials

Fishing rods used to be built out of natural materials like wood. Now, fishing rods are made out of graphite composite, a synthetic material that is much stronger and more flexible.

Design

The design of a fishing rod helps to distribute force and eliminate specific spots of pole-breaking tension. Synthetic graphite is a layered material that helps to further absorb force put on the ride by fishing. The graphite composite allows for flexibility so the rod is able to bend at incredible angles and not break.
