Where Did the Chinese Gender Prediction Chart Come From?

The legend of the Chinese gender prediction chart states that the chart was buried in a royal tomb, near Beijing, and the chart is supposedly more than 700 years old. Some people say that the original Chinese gender prediction chart is housed in the Institute of Science, located in Beijing. Others say that the chart was found in a tomb near Peking and that the chart currently resides in the Peking Museum of Science. Many websites state that the chart can accurately predict the gender of a pregnant woman's unborn baby with 90 percent accuracy, if it is used properly.
Determine the Chinese Lunar Age and Month

To use the chart, you must first know the age of the pregnant woman. However, that age must be according to the Chinese lunar calendar. To determine the Chinese lunar calendar age of the pregnant woman, you can use an online web tool (see Resources). Another way to calculate the Chinese lunar age of the mother-to-be is to follow these instructions: If you were born between January 1 and February 20 (including these dates), use your real, current age. If your birth date is between February 21 and December 31 (again, including these days), add one year to your current (English/Gregorian calendar) age.
Next, you need to determine the month of conception. Again, this needs to be according to the Chinese lunar month, not the Gregorian calendar month. Determining this can only be done specific to the year of conception, and several online tools can calculate it for you (see Resources).

Using the Calendar to Predict Gender

Once you have determined the Chinese lunar age of the mother-to-be, and the lunar month of conception, you can use the calendar to predict the gender of the baby. The ages of the mother are listed across the top of the chart, with the months of conception down the left side. Simply find the month of conception, then go across until you stop at the age of the mother-to-be. The box will be shaded either pink or blue. Pink means that the baby is or will be a girl; blue, of course, means the baby is or will be a boy. Because you can use the chart at any time, before or after the birth of a baby, it is possible to see whether the chart can correctly predict the genders of children who have already been born. Note that most websites claim the chart is to be used for entertainment only. In online polls, the accuracy of the chart runs to the expected 50 percent.
