How Does a CD Disco Ball Work?

  1. What Is a CD Disco Ball?

    • A CD disco ball is a homemade project imitating the dance-club icon of the '70s: the mirror disco ball. CD disco balls are made using old CDs, which are boiled in water in order to soften them, then cut into small pieces and glued to the outside of a large styrofoam sphere, which is hung from the ceiling by a string.

    Light Reflection

    • Disco balls do not have their own light source and work by reflecting light that is shown in their direction. Because each fragment of reflective surface (be it mirror pieces or CD pieces) is placed at a slightly different angle due to the curvature of the ball, the light will be reflected from each of these in a different direction. This will create a snow-like pattern of tiny reflections on the walls in all directions. If the ball is spun, these patterns will also spin about the room.

    Rainbow Reflection

    • An added benefit of a disco ball made from CDs is that CDs, unlike mirror fragments, reflect a pattern of rainbow colors. This is because CDs are not made of metal, but of a film encased in plastic, which means that the light reflects in much the same way that oil on the suface of a puddle of water does as light hits one surface then the other. (See the link in Resources below for more of the science behind this.)
