    General Overview

  1. Marriage counseling is a type of relationship therapy through which couples in intimate relationships are counseled on improving and developing their relationship. A marriage counselor is a trained professional, usually a therapist with a psychology degree, who helps couples recognize and address their relationship problems. Many married couples seek the services of a marriage counselor during troublesome times in their marriage with the hopes of preventing a divorce or separation.
  2. Typical Workday

  3. A marriage counselor will spend her workday seeing a variety of married couples. Some of the couples will be seeking counseling services for the first time, while others may be coming back for follow-up sessions. The marriage counselor listens to the married couples summarize their problems as well as talk in general about their lives together. All the while, the marriage counselor will be observing keenly and taking notes in an attempt to pinpoint what is causing the main problems in the relationship. During subsequent visits by the couples, the marriage counselor will help them understand the root of their problems as well as give them pointers and exercises to be done at home that will help them recover a good, balanced relationship.
  4. Methodology

  5. After evaluating the couples, a marriage counselor might give them examples that will help the couple better understand their relationship issues. He may also encourage a change in attitudes and perceptions to help the couple move past their issues and return to having a healthy marriage. A professional marriage counselor must be able to respect the couple's thoughts, opinions, experiences and emotions as well as be able to put himself into the other peoples' shoes. It is also highly important that the marriage counselor maintain the confidentiality of the persons involved.
