How Does a Product Idea Become an Actual Product?
-
Keep Your Idea Secret
-
When you have an amazing idea for a new product or invention, the last thing you want is for someone to steal your idea and gain the credit. In order to protect your product or invention, keep it low key. This is very important especially if your idea is completely original.
Write down everything that you can to describe your product in appearance and how it works. Keep this notebook in a particular spot, so that if anymore ideas arise, you can quickly jot them down.
Research Your Idea
-
Before you go out and make this idea officially your own, you're going to have to do some research and make sure that no one has beat you to it. You'll have to check patents using a number of different directories. If you happen to come across a patented idea that looks similar to yours as far as the artwork and prototype go, legally you will not be able to patent your idea or product.
You will also want to make sure that people will actually want to buy your product. There's nothing worse than having what you think is an incredible idea, but once you invest the money, you find out that everyone else disagrees. Ask around. Ask friends, family, neighbors and Internet buddies. Post polls on your website. Ask around in web forums. You need to reach a wide range of people to know whether or not demand for your product will be high enough to make profit.

Study
-
Once you've figured out that your idea is still rightfully yours and will be successful, begin studying the things you'll need to make your idea a reality. You definitely want to know your product and everything included in creating it before marketing it to the public. Research everything: tools, ingredients, accessories. Be sure that you will have the money to invest in the product. Create a product budget.
Create Your Prototype
-
You will need to create a small model of your idea before you patent it. Everyone will want and need to know as much as they possibly can about your product. Be sure that everything on your model is included in what you've written down about your initial invention. If you decide to add something to your product, go right ahead and jot it down in your idea notebook.
Patent It
-
Once you have your idea completely ready to go, it's time to patent it to make it 100 percent yours. Be sure that when looking for a patent that you have all of your notes, information on your idea and your prototype. Do research on the companies that want to patent your idea. Be sure to talk about prices on patenting and try to do some negotiating. Make sure that the prices fit within your budget.
Marketing
-
To market your product, you will need a plan. There are a few things you will need to decide, such as how are you going to get money to create many products or will you create them yourself? Will you be able to afford all of the tools and equipment needed to create your product and still make profit? Where are you going to sell your product? If you want to do everything on your own, you will need to obtain a vendor's license so that you have the right to sell items from your own shop. If you'd rather have someone else do the work for you, be sure that once again, you do research in order to have your product licensed by the right people or company.
