How Does a Fat Flush Diet Work?

  1. Fat Flush Diet General Information

    • The fat flush diet is a two in one. A detox plan is added to a reduction in calories to promote weight loss. The goal within this plan is also to increase metabolism and reduce the amount of water that is retained. This diet is often compared to the South Beach Diet.

    Fat Flush Diet Steps

    • The fat flush diet consists of three steps or phases. Phase one is the toughest, with a strict caloric limitation and a hefty list of foods that are to be all together. This phase lasts two weeks and allows the dieter a hard-to-maintain 1,100 to 1,200 calories per day. Bread, dairy products and sugar are a few of the foods that are off limits during this step. During the second step, the limit is increased to 1,500 calories per day. Step three is basically maintenance, with 1,500 calories per day still being the limit on calories. Gradually, the person is allowed to add certain starches back into his diet.

    Exercise

    • In addition to diet, the fat flush diet requires an exercise program. At least 20 minutes per day is recommended and should include low impact aerobics and strength training. This varies depending on the person's weight and overall health. It is recommended that anyone starting an exercise regime should speak with her doctor before starting.

    Pros and Cons

    • It's easy to find people who have had success with this diet. Many experts agree that the basics of the plan are good, but there are still drawbacks that some experts acknowledge. It is believed by some that the limit on calories is too low in the first step and can actually cause metabolism to lag instead of become faster. This slowdown of metabolism can actually hit twice with this diet by leaving the person with too little energy to handle the exercise regimen. It is agreed by many, however, that this diet, in addition to other diets, can be tailored to suit an individual in their diet needs. Based on a person's weight and overall health, a consultation with a nutritionist can determine what elements of the diet may benefit them. People with limited physical ability, for example, may be advised on a different exercise regime as opposed to the one the fat flush diet advises.
