How Does an FTP Client Work?

  1. Running an FTP Client

    • File Transfer Protocol, otherwise known as FTP, is the standard way to transfer data between computers. The exchange of files occurs over an active network connection and requires that one system have an FTP server installed on it and one system have an FTP client installed on it. Many websites offer free downloads of FTP clients, which can run on both Mac and Windows systems.

    Connecting to an FTP Server

    • When running your FTP client for the first time, you will be prompted to authenticate with the corresponding server by entering a username and password. Your company or office should supply you with this information, and most FTP clients allow you to save these credentials so you do not have to enter the information every time you want to transfer files. The client will then contact the FTP server, authenticate your login credentials and open a new session, during which time you can begin to complete tasks.

    Working with the FTP Client

    • Once the FTP client has successfully authenticated with the server and opened a new session, you can begin to perform functions between the two systems. Some clients offer a graphics-based operating, while others require you to type commands, but both kinds of clients give you the ability to upload and download files from the connected server. In addition, you can change the directories of the server and how the data on the server is organized.
