A slipcover is a fabric cover for a piece of furniture or pillow. They can be anything from a large draped piece of fabric, to custom made ones that fit each cushion, arm and skirting. You can make your own slipcovers easily by draping fabric over a piece of furniture and using ties on the arms and tucking it into the cushions. If you can sew, you can measure you piece and make custom covers. Most department stores sell ready made slipcovers. Custom made slipcovers can be ordered according to your measurements or by a designer that will come to your home and measure for you. Although slipcovers are not inexpensive, they are still less expensive than having your furniture re-upholstered. Re-upholstering removes the old fabric and the new fabric is permanent. Slipcovers can be removed to launder them, and you can have a different one for each season if you like.

Most department stores carry ready made slipcovers for couches and chairs. They make them for a variety of sizes, but not usually for a type of cushion that comes in front of an arm, called a "T" cushion. They don't fit very tight and you have to keep them tucked into the back of the couch or chair. This can be a constant battle, as every time you sit down the cover pulls out of the cushion and must be fixed whenever someone gets up. Some covers have elastic that hold the covers on a little tighter. If your furniture is pretty square, this type works well. If you are just looking for a new look for your furniture or a protective cover though, this may be your best option. It will be the least expensive way to go unless you can make your own.

Custom slipcovers are more expensive than ready-made slipcovers, but look much better because they fit your furniture and can be made from any fabric you choose. There are companies where you can take your own measurements and order the slipcovers. When they are completed, they are sent to you by mail. You can also hire a designer to come to your home and take the measurements. They will have fabric samples and pictures of sample work for you to see. You can then choose your style and color, and they will make your slipcovers and come back to put them on, making sure they fit properly. This is the most expensive way to go, but also the way to get the best fit and material. You will want to ask and make sure the fabric is washable and will not shrink or distort in the wash. These type of slipcovers should last for years. You can even get a special cover for a holiday or a season without having to permanently change your furniture.
