How Does a Facial Mask Work?
Deep Cleansing Masks
-
The most common use of a facial mask is for deep cleansing. Everyone can benefit from a deep cleansing mask or facial at least once a week. These masks are made to clean deep down into your pores, leaving your skin clean and pure from pollution, makeup and dirt. Leave a clay based mask on your skin until it dries, then remove with warm water. The clay will draw out impurities such as dirt and oil, reduce acne breakouts and deliver medication to the skin.
Other deep cleaning masks may include ingredients such as sulfur, aloe vera or even citrus. As with a clay mask, these provide deep pore cleansing for removing blemishes and blackheads and unclogging pores.
Hydrating and Moisturizing
-
The next most common facial mask are those that either hydrate or moisturize the skin, leaving it feeling silky, smooth and nourished. They will restore the suppleness of your skin by replenishing the water content. Hydrating and moisturizing masks can be done two or three times a week, depending on the dryness of your skin. For those will oilier skin, try a gel based, non-oil mask.
Brightening and Whitening
-
Many new masks on the market target dark age spots, sun damage and dull skin by brightening and whitening, giving you a youthful glow. These slow down the transfer of melanin to cell in the skin, help to block hyper pigmentation and protect against sun, age and dark spots. Other masks in this category may offer hydroxy acids from apples, lemons, grapes and other fruits to visibly improve skin tone and texture.
