How Does a Concierge Spend a Workday?

  1. They schedule travel

    • This could mean purchasing plane tickets, securing passes for a bus tour or booking a taxi to take guests to the airport. Of course, the guest or client will provide the funds for the purchase or instruct the concierge to expense it or add it to the room bill.

They accept deliveries of mail and packages

    • They often sign for them if needed. They then notify the individual of their receipt, usually via a telephone call or a note in their personal mailbox.

    They give advice

    • Usually this comes in the form of explaining things for families to do in the area or giving directions to wayward travelers. But concierges, like bartenders, can sometimes be asked to impart life lessons as well.

    They make reservations

    • They book tickets to concerts, shows and clubs and make reservations at restaurants. They can do this the day of the event or several days, weeks or even months in advance. Because of their frequent orders, they may gain access to the best tables or seats in the house for their clients.

    They receive guests

    • At a hotel, they will greet individuals at the information desk and often they will ask them to sign in and show some form of identification. Personal concierges may meet people at restaurants or at their client's home or office before they're allowed face time with the client. This is usually for security reasons but can also help out in terms of time management.

    They sometimes accommodate unusual requests

    • Concierges may be asked to help set up a marriage proposal, find a lizard costume for an aquarium benefit or rent a purple car that will match a client's evening gown. Fortunately most concierges are well-connected and able to think on their feet. If not, they will have to learn to be fairly quickly.

    They offer great customer service

    • They always provide service with a smile, no matter who their clients are or how much money they have. They are not known to provide preferential treatment. Many find that to be more than unprofessional.
