How Does a Self-Evaluation Work?

  1. Introduction

    • A self-evaluation is also known as a self-assessment. It's where a person gets to take a good, long look at herself and write down what he or she sees. A self-evaluation measures a person's likes, dislikes, aptitudes and more. Some employers use self-evaluation forms prior to hiring an employee, while some gyms offer self-evaluation forms to see how potential clients view their physical fitness.

    Consider the Purpose

    • Before you complete a self-evaluation, you should stop for a moment to think of who requested the self-evaluation and how it will be used. A self-evaluation for a potential job or part of a college application is more important than one for a club membership.

    Write Thoughtful Answers

    • A self-evaluation lets someone else know how you feel about yourself. Since you don't get a second chance to make a first impression, it's important that you take time to consider your answers before you write them down.

An employment self-evaluation, for example, can potentially follow you throughout your employment career. Hastily completing the form in order to get it done and over with can work against you. More than someone else's opinion of you, a self-evaluation gives the potential employer insight on how you feel about yourself. Take time to think about what type of self-image you want to portray to your employer.

    Honesty Works Best

    • It's best not to over-think the self-evaluation. Doing so may cause you to end up doing more harm than good. The only thoughts that you are sure of are your own thoughts. Don't try to second-guess each question in an attempt to figure out what the evaluator wants to hear. Since you don't know for sure what they're looking for, all you can do is be honest in your self-evaluation.

    Analyze Strengths and Weaknesses

    • The purpose of a self-evaluation is to assess strengths, weaknesses, skills and abilities. If you're having a difficult time coming up with qualities in any of these areas, have a talk with friends and family members who know you well. They can help you to pinpoint personality skills and qualities that you sometimes overlook.

    Choose Words Carefully

    • It's especially important to choose words carefully on a self-evaluation form. The reader doesn't have the benefit of watching your facial expressions, listening to the inflections in your voice or watching your body language. A cute, witty saying on paper may fall flat and come across as egotistical. Be sure to re-read the self-evaluation to ensure your words won't be misinterpreted.

    Let it Go

    • Once the self-evaluation is complete, let it go. There's nothing you can do to change the document once it has been filed, so lamenting what you should have said or could have said does nothing for your peace of mind. It's now up to the evaluator to review and make a decision.
