Does Garlic Keep Fleas Away?
-
Fleas as Pests
-
The flea starts out as an egg and goes through several changes in its lifetime. The larva and pupa stage are not as bothersome as the adult flea. It is the adult flea that many pets and humans are allergic to. This allergy can cause skin disorders, tapeworms, and even anemia. The Bubonic plague was spread, in part, by the fleas of infested animals.
Treatments for Irritation
-
There are many products that can help with the itching and irritation associated with a flea bite. Putting ice on the bite can minimize the swelling and itching. Another common treatment is calamine lotion. This pink liquid can help dry up the bite.

Controlling the Infestation
-
Products such as brewer's yeast with garlic can help to deter fleas from getting onto animals. The fleas are repelled by the odor of the garlic. Adding a brewer's yeast/garlic supplement, once a day to the diet of the animal will keep the fleas at bay. A little goes a long way when it comes to garlic.
Regular vacuuming and daily cleaning of any infested areas can keep flea infestations to a minimum.
Warnings
-
Too much garlic in the canine diet can cause medical problems. Some people have suggested sprinkling garlic powder onto the dog's food. This can cause a lethargic reaction in the dog. It is advisable to talk to a veterinarian before adding raw garlic to the dog's diet.
