Photo by TonystlTree skirts were created to hide the bottom of the Christmas tree. Live trees must be kept in water, and fake trees often have a large stand to keep them upright. The decorative skirt boosts the look of both. Tree skirts also collect the needles from live trees, many of which are dyed so they stay green. The dye can stain floors and carpet, which is where tree skirts come into play. -
Tree skirts come in all different sizes. Designers like Martha Stewart will have their own holiday collections. Hobby stores like Hobby Lobby or Micheal's Crafts are also great places to find tree skirts. Some people make their own for a fun holiday project--especially for kids. Patterns can be found at hobby stores. One very famous tree skirt was created in 2003 for the White House. Quilters from all 50 states made the skirt, which appeared under a magnificent tree in the Blue Room of the White House.
- Tree skirts usually look like a giant circle with a hole cut out of the middle. There will also be a slit up one side, connecting to the hole. The skirt will shield the device used to hold up the tree and provide moisture. The slit is usually placed in back of the tree but easily accessible. The rest of the skirt is laid out so it looks like a circle under your tree.
