    An Occupation

  1. Accounting is a very popular career choice. After earning a college degree, there's the option take a test to become a CPA, or Certified Public Accountant. Having this title is not a must, but it will start you out at a higher salary. Accountants can work in large firms, go independent or work as a bookkeeper with small businesses. Some small businesses will even bring the receipts and information to a bookkeeper's house once a week, making this a great home business option.
  2. Tax Preparation

  3. Tax preparation is a big part of accounting. Tax preparation jobs are seasonal, running from January to April. An accountant prepares taxes for individuals and businesses and submits them to the government and the state either through the mail or electronically. This may be done in your own home or for a company like H & R Block.
  4. Manage Your Own Business

  5. If you are going to manage your own business, it is important that you study accounting. If you have no knowledge on the subject, you run the risk of hiring someone who may cheat you or simply do a bad job of it, and you would have no way of knowing that you were being ripped off or mislead. Even if you don't want to keep up with the books yourself, if you study accounting, you will have the knowledge to look over the records once per month to make sure everything is legitimate. This will save you money in the long run, and may even save your business.
  6. Teach Others

  7. Studying accounting will also give you the opportunity to teach others. You can teach small workshops on a part-time basis, or earn a full-time income teaching professionally. Both high schools and colleges offer classes in accounting. There are also many programs that offer night school courses.
