How Does a Financial Advisor Spend a Workday?
-
Helping Clients
-
The primary objective of a financial advisor is serving clients. While some financial advisors see dozens of clients within the span of a single workday, some financial advisors don't spend very much face-to-face time with clients. How much time a financial advisor spends directly in front of clients depends on several factors such as the size of the advisor's pool of clients, the preference of the clients to meet in person or consult over the phone or online, and the advisor's availability. While some financial advisors spend the majority of their workday in front of prospective and existing clients, some financial advisors do not spend very much time dealing directly with clients at all.
Continuing Education
-
Financial advisors must stay on top of current financial trends in order to accurately advise clients. This is not a job where education stops once a degree is reached or a certification is obtained. Almost every financial advisor spends some time during the workday gaining more knowledge. For some advisors this may mean spending a few minutes every morning reviewing the financial climate online while for other advisors this may mean putting hours toward additional education and certifications. If financial advisors don't spend some time educating themselves about the products they offer as well as the status of the economy, then they will have a hard time being effective in their chosen field.

Administrative Tasks
-
For many financial advisors, the majority of their workdays are filled with administrative tasks as well as pursuing new clients. Financial advisors are often self-employed even if they function under the name of a well-known company. If they do not spend some time trying to expand their client base then they may not generate enough income to remain in business. There are other administrative tasks associated with being a financial advisor, such as reviewing the files of existing customers and taking care of other tasks associated with running an office. Financial advisors working as part of a larger company may be able to delegate some administrative tasks to other employees, but most financial advisors spend some time working on administrative tasks at some point during their workday.
