You must already have a Yahoo email account to use Yahoo chat. It only takes two minutes to set one up if you don't already have one. You will also need to download Yahoo Instant Messenger, which is free. Once you have those two things completed, you are ready to use Yahoo Chat. You can get there one of two ways. You can go to Yahoo's home page at Yahoo.com and type in "Chat," or you can use the link that is provided for you at the end of this article.

Before you actually begin chatting you will want to know what the safety rules are. After you click the Yahoo Chat link, you will be taken to a page that will teach you about Internet safety. You will learn not to give out your last name, your address, your social security number, and so forth. You will also be given links to other parts of Yahoo Chat, such as how to set up your main profile page. Using Yahoo Chat

Your Messenger is now installed in your computer, so you need to click on it. There is a drop down menu from the top. The top says "Messenger," and you want to click on that. Scroll down until you see Yahoo Chat and click on that. Then click "Join a Room." Now you get to pick which category you want to chat about. Are you interested in business, or are you interested in parenting? After you click on the category, you will be given a link to verify that you are real. This is only done the first time you use Yahoo Chat. Just click the link and then enter the letters and numbers shown on the screen. Hit "Enter," and if you did everything right you will be taken to the chat room.

You will see a list of users on the right-hand side. These are the people who are logged in to the chat at that moment. You will see the conversation that has been going on in the text box in front of you and you will hear any conversations that are taking place in your speakers. You can click the mute button if you prefer no sound. To communicate with the other members, just type your message in the box and click enter. It will then appear on the screen for all to see. Watch for an answer and then reply back. It is that simple.
