How Does Autism Happen?

Genetic changes in brain function can influence the development of autism.
  1. The Reality of Autism

    • Autism spectrum disorders or ASD affect approximately 1 in every 150 children. Classified as functional deficits in communication, social interaction and behavior, individuals with autism face considerable challenges performing basic social tasks associated with education, holding down a job and maintaining relationships. Although no one specific root cause for autism has been identified, research does suggest that there are two principle contributors to the development of autism: genetics and environmental toxins.

    Genetic Causes of Autism

    • Genetic changes in brain function can influence the development of autism.

Research on autism suggests that this condition may be linked to genetic abnormalities which create alterations in brain function. Alterations in brain function can make it difficult for individuals with autism to regulate specific behaviors and social interactions. Although there are no concrete rules for determining which children will develop this condition, evidence does suggest that autism is closely linked with specific genetic abnormalities such as Fragile X syndrome and congenital rubella syndrome.

    Environmental Toxins

    • Heavy metals such as mercury have been implicated in the development of autism.

Research on what causes autism also suggests that environmental toxins may influence the development of this condition. In particular, heavy metals such as mercury can affect brain function, prompting the development of autism symptoms. Increases in environmental toxins continues to be a concern as overall rates of autism in the general population continue to increase.

    Further Reserach

    • More research is needed to determine the root cause of autism.

Even though scientists have made some progress in understanding what causes autism, the reality is that the root cause of this condition remains a mystery. Only through additional research and investigation will the true cause of this disorder be illuminated.
