What Is the Reason for Sneezing?
-
A sneezing feline companion might stir up some worry in many owners. And while it is good to be cautious and concerned, there are some common facts about feline sneezing that can help one understand how and why your furry friend is sneezing.
How a Cat Sneezes
-
Feline sneezing is fairly simple to understand. First, consider how humans sneeze. As people breathe, the nose filters the air they take in. Tiny hairs capture dirt and dust, or mucus in our nasal passages capture these irritants. However, if the lining within our nose becomes irritated, it triggers a sneeze.
Cats, like humans, breathe in dirt and dust. When they come into contact with irritants, their body reacts the same as a human's.
Some Suspects for Sneezing
-
Cats can sneeze for a variety of reasons. Pollen, dust, mold and even allergies are all triggers of sneezing in felines. These causes of sneezing are fairly common, however feline sneezing can be more serious.
Illnesses such as gum disease can cause a cat's nasal passages to become swollen, prompting sneezing. Also, viral infections can cause cats to have inflamed sinuses, thus sneezing is very common and prolonged.
Viral infections and gum disease are just two of the more serious causes of feline sneezing. If sneezing seems prolonged and frequent, it is best to contact your veterinarian in order to assess the true cause of your cat's sneezing.
