Cockatiels go through a courting phase before choosing a mate.
Just like humans, cockatiels engage in courtship in tryingfemales try to attract the attention of the opposite sex. They will scream, screech and chirp. Male cockatiels will beat on their perch, cage or nest box and strut around to impress females. He may go even go in and out of the nest box. To attract males, female cockatiels crouch next to each other on the perch in a typical mating stance. They may also try to feed a male they have interest in.
Cockatiels are inseparable when they are ready to mate.
When ready to mate, the male mounts the female and moves his tail side to side until his vent is in position under her tail. Copulation occurs during this time. After the act of mating, the male goes on about his business and the female preens herself.
