Can People With Flat Feet Do Ballet?
-
Ballet as an Exercise
-
If a person has weak ankles or flat arches, ballet is considered to be one of the best exercises for the feet and ankles. It stretches the muscles of the feet, and it can even strengthen the arch of the foot to some degree, including increasing the flexibility of that part of the foot somewhat. Ballet is a good all around body strengthening tool and muscle toning exercise as well.
Extra Support while on Pointe
-
If the dancer with flat feet needs extra support while going on Pointe, it is possible to wrap the feet using an ACE bandage, and the shoes themselves can be bent slightly to match the dancer's natural arch. Also, many dancers have their feet measured very carefully and have their Pointe shoes made to order. There is always a way if the dancer is determined to reach her goals.

High, Medium or Low Arches
-
Sometimes a very high arch is actually detrimental to the dancer's technique, as it can throw off the positioning of the foot and perhaps even the dancer's center of gravity. Low arches are not the only problem that ballet dancers can face. As far as the perfect Pointe position is concerned, the medium arch is actually the most promising for the dancer's technique.
