How Do Dorms Get Their Furniture?
-
The School
-
Most colleges and universities provide the basics for a dorm room. This may include a bed, a desk and a dresser. Some schools provide a little more than that. They may have a coffee table and chair or a couch if your dorm room is more like an apartment. You can visit colleges and take tours of their dorm rooms to see what furniture is provided by the school ahead of time. Then you would know what you need to bring from home or rent from a nearby company.
Your Home
-
There are many items that you are going to want to take from home. You can bring your own chair, bean bag seat, bedding, television and DVD player. If you are an avid coffee drinker, then don't forget your coffee pot. You should also bring a computer or laptop if you have one. The school will have a computer lab, but you will have to stand in line if they are all full and wait until one opens up. If you bring your own, you can work in your room anytime you need to. Your parents will tell you what furniture you can bring from home, and they may help you purchase some furniture to take with you to college.

Rental Agency
-
Most colleges and universities have a rental agency nearby to rent out furniture to college students. You don't need the furniture for the whole year, and you may not want to spend the money to buy it. Some items you may want to rent are small refrigerators, hot pots, laptops or computers. You may have to pay something like $20 per month to rent it, but that is whole lot cheaper than buying something you won't ever use again after college. For instance, when are you ever going to use a mini fridge ever again? If there are no rental companies near the school, you can use a rental company in your home town, but you will have to lug all the furniture to your college and then back again.
