Eyelashes do more than make eyes look pretty. Their primary function is to protect our eyes. Without eyelashes, dirt and debris would not be kept out of our eyes so efficiently. The long lashes can catch any nearby debris before it enters the eye and does harm.

Eyelashes perform a similar function to a cat's whiskers. Whiskers on a cat provide warning signals that an object is nearby. Our eyelashes perform a similar duty for us. Eyelashes provide a warning signal to our brain that an object is too close to the eye. The eye then shuts reflexively to protect itself.

Eyelashes enhance the look of the eye, especially on women, who are able to curl them, color them, even extend them. They bring out the natural beauty of the eye and give them a certain glamorous look. Plus, they help with flirting too.
