What Happens if You Put Mayonnaise in Your Hair?
    • Mayonnaise contains eggs and oil, which add shine, body and strength to your hair, leaving it silky soft. As an added bonus, the oil in mayonnaise kills head lice by suffocating them without using harsh chemicals, making it a great lice treatment for young children. You won't need to worry about how often you can use it or about what chemicals are being absorbed into your child's scalp. Leave the mayonnaise in the hair for at least 30 minutes for a hair treatment. If treating for head lice, leave it on for several hours, but preferably overnight. Then wash it out, and use a lice comb to remove the nits. The nits will not be dead from the mayonnaise treatment, so you need to work carefully to remove them all. If you are able to sit outside in the direct sun, the nits are easy to see, otherwise use a bright fluorescent light. Repeat after several days for effective elimination of head lice, just in case you missed nits that have hatched by them.

    • Place a cup of mayonnaise in your hair. The amount will vary depending on the length of your hair. You want enough to cover every hair from the root all the way to the end. Massage the mayonnaise in, taking your time. Once all of the hair is coated, place a shower cap over the hair and allow the mayonnaise to work for several hours, sleeping on it overnight if possible.

    • Washing mayonnaise out of your hair can be quite challenging because of the oil it contains. Liquid dish detergent that contains ingredients with properties to bind and remove oil works the best for removing mayonnaise. It usually takes two or three thorough washings to remove all of the oil using water as hot as you can stand it. Your hair will look greasy and unwashed if you do not remove all of the oil. If you are still having trouble, try rinsing the hair with white vinegar. Vinegar also repels head lice and makes hair shiny. Once all of the mayonnaise is washed from your hair, it should look shiny and healthy as if you had a hot oil hair treatment to moisturize your hair.
