How Does a Male Model Spend a Workday?
  1. Good Morning!

    • Male models start their day like anyone else. They wake up, check email and walk the dog. A good breakfast is essential, since there are no set meal breaks in the modeling world.

Since male models' musculature is paramount, a trip to the gym is standard. Male models have to keep those muscles cut and primed for the cameras.

After the workout, it's time to head home and take care of grooming for the busy day ahead. This means cleansing and moisturizing the face, a good hair wash and thorough shave.

Next comes the hard part, dressing. If this is a day with "go-sees" scheduled, then a flattering high-fashion outfit is necessary. For a shoot day, comfortable clothes like jeans and a nice t-shirt are fine.

It's imperative to get in touch with the agency, check phone messages and return calls. The model's agent will have information on freshly made appointments and changes to the daily schedule. The will be many of these check-up calls during the day, perhaps to several agencies that employ the model.

The model leaves his home with more than enough time to get to his appointments. Tardiness is frowned upon.

Let's say that our model has a day with one go-see, followed by a magazine editorial shoot.

A go-see is a meeting between a model and possible employer. Usually, the client will have looked at the model's "comp card" (a pictorial resume printed on cardstock) and called the model's agency to set up a meeting. At this, the male model hands in his portfolio, or "book," for inspection. After this, he may be instructed to try on clothing, asked about past experience or dismissed for the day. These events are packed with models from many agencies, so they can be nerve-wracking and competitive.

Next, the model leaves and goes to his shoot. He spends about 30 minutes to an hour in hair and makeup. A stylist's assistant helps to clothe the model in whatever outfit the stylist has selected. The photographer directs the model, positioning him alone or with other models in various locales and positions. Shoots are tiring and can stretch for hours, with frequent short breaks for lighting adjustments and cosmetic touch-ups.

    The Evening

    • Models often work other jobs in order to make regular money, since clients can be late with payment or might compensate in clothing. Models early in their careers don't make nearly as much money as a model who has landed a campaign. Male models, especially, find that lucrative jobs can be hard to land.

Many models are also in college and might take night or weekend classes in order to build a future after the modeling life is over.

Alternatively, the model might attend a social event or club function in order to unwind, build buzz and network.

The final choice is that the model may simply go home. After all, it's been a long day, and fatigue can affect appearance severely. The evening ends, just as the day begins, in a normal fashion.
