What is Electrolysis?
-
Electrolysis is a process that is used to permanently remove body hair from an individual's body. Both men and women use electrolysis to remove unwanted body hair permanently, instead of continuing to shave that body hair off or to use hot wax treatment. An alternative to electrolysis with similar results, but less long-term efficacy, is laser hair removal. Most electrolysis treatments take around two years of treatment to become permanently effective, with the duration and frequency of treatment sessions depending on unique criteria from patient to patient.
Are There Different Types of Electrolysis?
-
Although most people don't know it, there are actually three different distinct types of electrolysis. All of the methods of electrolysis work by placing an extremely thin metal probe into the hair follicle and then introducing electricity to the hair follicle in order to harm it. What does vary, however, is the way in which this electrical current harms the hair follicle. In galvanic electrolysis, the electrical current creates lye within the follicle, which burns the area chemically and removes the hair follicle. In thermolysis, another form of electrolysis, heat from the electrical current burns the hair follicle and produces the same result. In blend method electrolysis, both galvanic elements of electrolysis and thermolysis are used simultaneously to gain the final effect of killing the hair follicle.

Of course, the fact that all forms of electrolysis essentially "burn" the hair follicles until they're dead does make the process sound potentially painful. For the majority of patients, however, the sensation that is felt during an electrolysis treatment session isn't particularly painful. The process, when executed properly, doesn't actually break the skin, but the electrical current does create a noticeable sensation that can be unpleasant for some people. It's a good idea to take an over-the-counter pain killer about a half hour before your electrolysis session. Also, for those who find the process too painful, topical anesthetic can be used to numb the area so that the electrolysis is completely pain-free.
