How Do Guppies Mate?
    • Guppies are the infamous reproducer at the aquarium store, and for good reason. Guppies mate more often than most fish, boasting larger fry litters and the ability to get pregnant again within a few hours of giving birth. So how exactly do Guppies mate so quickly and so easily?

    • Male guppies each have an anal fin called a gonopodium. At the time of sexual maturity, the anal fin will erect itself and the male guppy will be able to impregnate a female guppy literally by just bumping them and injecting their sperm into the female. This quite often happens so quickly that many guppy owners do not even realize that it is happening, since it looks like the male is just running into the female and quickly swimming away.

    • After the female has been impregnated, her gravid spot will begin to darken. The gravid spot is a small area near the anus of the guppy. It will help you determine whether or not your guppy is pregnant. Within 30 to 45 days, your female guppy will then give live birth to her fry, ranging from 2 to 100 fry in the liter. Most liters usually average around 30 to 45 fry. Like many other fish, guppies will eat their fry, so it is important to remove the new guppies from the tank as soon as possible.
