How Do Robots Help Doctors?

  1. Robot Assisted Medical Care

    • Robots assist doctors in performing their jobs efficiently. The role of robots in the medical field is established and is likely to increase as technology progresses. Robots used in the medical industry do not necessarily resemble the robots in science fiction movies. The robots in the medical industry do not function independently and do not diagnose patients. They are not replacements for doctors. They are technologically advanced tools to assist doctors.

    Robots in Surgery

    • Robots are used by some surgeons to assist them in complex surgical procedures. Surgical robots are robotic arms that are controlled by a surgeon through computer equipment attached to the robot. The computer controlled robot, attached with video equipment, gives the surgeon a magnified view of the surgical procedure. The robotic arm controlled can perform surgical procedures with more precision than a human hand could. Even a surgeon with the steadiest hands can not stay as still as a robotic arm. The human eye can not see as well as a magnified computer image. Robotic arms can reach areas that are unreachable by a human hand. Combining the steady movement, enhanced visual ability and extended reach provided by robotic technology gives surgeons the ability to perform complex surgeries with a higher success rate.

    Virtual Doctors

    • Robots are being used by some doctors to monitor patients in the hospital setting. Doctors can control the robots remotely allowing the doctors to interact with the patients from a remote setting. Using the robot, doctors can view and communicate with the patients without even being there. While these robots do not replace the doctors need to physically interact with patients, they do allow the doctor to check in with patients when the doctor is not able to be at the hospital. Potentially, the robots give doctors the ability the check on their patients more frequently. A doctor can be at home when off duty and still check on a patient when needed, giving the doctor access to their patients twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

Tiny Robots of the not so Distant Future

    • Scientists in Israel have developed tiny micro robots that can crawl inside the blood vessels of a human body. These micro robots would give doctors the ability to view inside the body of a patient in a way they never could before. Micro robots could change the way doctors diagnose patients. The invention of this new technology, while not currently available, is exciting nonetheless.
