Why does a website get blocked? When the time comes to protect and preserve the integrity of your home or office computer, the Internet is what most owners want to block. Rated by content or specific websites, locations and servers, a computer administrator has control over who sees what while using the computer in question. Using some easy techniques, questionable websites can now be blocked from any computer.
Managing administration control of a computer will allow only the administrator to access files like the host files. A website is blocked by redirecting host files to lock out websites and content that is questionable so that it is password protected from being opened by others. Using the parental controls offered through a browser's security settings can allow for some content types to be blocked. While this will not exclude websites as host file redirection does, it is an easy way to control what type of content can be viewed.
Go to the tools tab of a browser window, click on \"Internet Options\" and then \"Security.\" This set of options will allow you to alter the way your computer views the Internet. If administration values have been set, it will take an administrator password to alter these settings after you make any changes.
Modify the Host Files on Your Computer
Access the host files of the computer in question to block specific websites from being viewed. The host files control the types of websites that the Internet browser can visit, and the location of these correctable host files can be found on your computer. For example: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts. Working with host files of a computer is the best way to block specific websites from being viewed. This method does not use any content filters, but it focuses on known problem websites that have been updated to be blocked in the future.
To makes these changes, right click the host file and uncheck the \"Read Only\" attribute if checked. Now your computer is ready to accept the new host information which will direct the user away from website addresses that have been entered into the host file as ones to avoid.
Open the host files in the notepad application. To do this, double click on the host file, and select Notepad as the program to open the file with. Notepad will open the file for viewing and alterations by allowing you to save changes you will make as you enter websites that will be blocked in the future. When first opened, the host file will look something like this: 127.0.0.1 localhost. Enter in the website address you want blocked under the first line of test like this. Enter a line of text that reads: 127.0.0.1 www.(websitetobeblocked).com. Now the host file should read like this:
Add lines for each website you want blocked from the computer in question and this will create a custom set of directives that your computer must follow. By completing this task you are taking control of what can be seen by users of a particular computer. Blocking websites can be accomplished easily using this technique.
