How Does Concrete Harden?

What is Concrete

  • Concrete is a composite made of three ingredients: cement, water and a filler. The latter is rock or sand and can be either fine or coarse. The cement and water are mixed together to make a thick paste that becomes the binder.

Why Does Concrete Harden

  • It is the water in the concrete essential to the hardening process. The water, mixed with cement, shrinks as it dries. This causes the concrete to harden. The process through which this happens is called hydration.

What Makes Concrete Stronger or Weaker

  • The strength of finished concrete is determined by the cement paste used. This paste is made of a mixture of cement and water. The more water used in the paste, the weaker the resulting concrete will be.
