How Does a Yeast Infection Start?
-
Imbalance of bacteria and yeast levels
-
Vaginal yeast infections are a common occurrence for women. While such an infection can be uncomfortable and bothersome, it is generally not a serious condition, and can be easily remedied. A vaginal yeast infection is nothing more than an irritation of the vagina and the surrounding area known as the vulva. This irritation is commonly caused by an imbalance of yeast levels.
Yeast can typically be found on normal human skin and in areas of moisture on the body. It is naturally found in the vaginal area in small amounts. Normal, protective bacteria can also be found in the vaginal area and it is this bacteria which keeps the yeast levels in check. If something happens to disrupt the balance between the bacteria and the yeast, it will cause the growth of excess yeast which results in an infection.
What causes the imbalance?
-
The normal, protective bacteria that is found in the vaginal area can sometimes be eradicated. Once this bacteria is gone, the yeast will multiply and invade the surrounding tissue, causing irritation. But just how exactly does this imbalance occur in the first place? It can be brought on by any number of issues including excessive moisture in the vaginal area, stress, a poor diet, lack of sleep, sickness, an excessive amount of sugary foods, a change in hormone levels and medications that contain antibiotics and steroids.

The results of an infection
-
Once the yeast levels have increased to abnormal amounts, an infection is inevitable. The symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include itching, burning and swelling in the vaginal area, a white, odorless vaginal discharge, and pain during sexual intercourse and urination. A yeast infection can be very uncomfortable. Over-the-counter medications can calm the symptoms and clear up the infection sooner.
